Starting off 2019 with professional family photos at the WRAL Azalea Gardens

As a professional photographer, it is an honor when I have the opportunity to watch a family grow right before my lens.

I first captured the Selvy family when they married in 2014. It was an intimate affair that truly celebrated the love Leah and Darrick have for each other.

Plenty has happened since, from the Selvys having a daughter to me moving to Florida, then moving back to North Carolina.

Upon returning to NC, I contacted Leah just to catch up, and one of her first messages was “we need to take family pictures.”

My take on family photos is they should be more than just recording what people looked like at a certain time of their lives. They should capture a family in its natural state with very limited posed photos.

Out of the 100 or so frames I shot of the Selvys at the WRAL Azalea Gardens, maybe less than 10 were posed photos. The rest were the Selvys being themselves, which was wonderful to capture.

I look forward to capturing more of the Selvy family during Leah and Darrick's fifth anniversary celebration in May.

Do you need a maternity shoot? If you're pregnant, the answer is yes

Of course it's in my best interest to tell you, the expectant mother, that you need a maternity shoot.

But the reason is much bigger than capturing great pictures.

Expectant mothers, especially those expecting their first child, endure an unique journey. Not only do they have a glow, but there's great excitement in having new life growing inside of them.

There's so much hope. So many dreams.

None of that can be captured once the baby arrives.

This is why professional photography is so important, for you want to capture moments like that before they go away - moments that Keren nearly missed.

Keren, who is a few away from giving birth, didn't want maternity pictures at first. But her friends told her she would regret not doing them.

Our mini session in St. Petersburg validated that.

Yes, photographers can keep secrets

Photographers are often tapped with recording some of the most important moments of people's lives.

Weddings. Graduations. Pregnancy announcements.

But every once in a while, we're tasked with taking great pictures and not telling anyone right away, as in the case with Regina and Gregory.

Both are expecting their first child, and as those with children know, the first few months can be tricky. Such is why they wanted things to be all clear before telling the world - which they did this morning.

What was also cool about this shoot is that it was my first in downtown Tampa. It's been a few years since I've lived in an area with a real skyline, and it was wonderful capturing that and the joy of two expecting first-time parents.

Congratulations Regina & Gregory!
